children can be inspired and where learning to understand is at
the heart of all instruction.

The New Millennium The school opens in 2000 with a visit by Tibetan monks
who help us bring a new awareness to our work by designing a sand
mandala of amazing depth and beauty and then, in a deeply moving
ceremony, destroying it and offering it to the Detroit River. Our board
takes the risks necessary to help us realize the dream of the Karen Joy
Theatre, which opens in the spring of 2002 with an original play, "Heros,"
written by Karen Moore and Ted Strunck, and which has continued to
attract family-friendly performers of national calibre. Our enrollment
grows to the largest ever (90 children) and our staff becomes one of the
most dedicated in the independent school network. Today, a new long
range plan is in place to help care for that staff and ensure the
continuity of the school into the future. Upland Hills enters its 35th
year with a deep sense of gratitude and appreciation for our history,
especially for all those whose hard work has allowed us to continue
doing ours.
